Being self-disciplined is an absolute must for any full-time artist. You have to make yourself be organized and plan ahead and practice daily painting/creating. Then you also have to stay on top of the business end of your business. There’s a lot to do and a lot to think about and remember and if you work from home it’s very tempting to just find other things to do. It’s very easy to just check your social media accounts or start a load of laundry or take a nap, and before you know it, hours have passed and you’ve accomplished nothing. Here are some of my tips on staying on track:
- Use a desk planner. I’ve relied on a planner for over 20 years and I’d be lost without it. I write everything down in it, including contact info and passwords. At the end of each day, I create a to-do/goal list for the next day. I put top priority items at the top of the list and I love to check off each task as it’s completed. If I don’t complete a task, I’ll add it to the next day’s to-do list.
- Use the Notes app on your phone. I keep a list of supplies I need on my phone and then purchase them all at once and start a new supply list. An artist can never have too many art supplies, am I right?
- Try to find a daily routine that works for you and stick to it. Figure out when you’re most productive and plan to accomplish your tasks during that productive time.
- Try to make your work time as enjoyable as possible so you don’t procrastinate. Light a candle, listen to music or a podcast, and take regular breaks to keep your mind fresh.
- Think positively by giving yourself motivational affirmations. Tell yourself that you can do things!
- Reward yourself! Find little ways to reward yourself for all your small acts of self-discipline. I like to reward myself with a fancy coffee drink on Fridays if I’ve had a productive week.
